Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been handed a four-match suspension and fined 1,617,000 Turkish lira ($44,000) by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) following controversial comments about referees after a goalless Super Lig draw against Galatasaray on Monday.
The TFF cited Mourinho’s “derogatory and offensive statements” against Turkish referees and accusations of chaos in Turkish football as violations of sports ethics that could incite violence and disorder.
The match, officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic at the request of both clubs, became contentious after Mourinho praised the foreign referee while criticizing Turkish officials. He also made remarks about the Galatasaray bench, describing their reactions to an early challenge as “jumping like monkeys,” which led to accusations of racism from Galatasaray. The club announced plans to pursue legal action, claiming Mourinho’s statements were offensive to Turkish people.
Fenerbahce defended their coach, arguing his comments were taken out of context and distorted. Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba also supported Mourinho, dismissing allegations of racism. This is not the first time Mourinho has faced disciplinary action for criticizing Turkish referees, with prior fines and suspensions on record.
The TFF imposed separate penalties for Mourinho’s remarks during the press conference and his alleged conduct in entering the referees’ room post-match. Alongside the four-game ban, he received additional fines for actions deemed harmful to Turkish football’s reputation. Fenerbahce has announced plans to appeal the decision.
