Lyon head coach Paulo Fonseca has been handed a nine-month suspension following a heated altercation with referee Benoît Millot during Lyon’s 2-1 Ligue 1 victory over Brest on March 2. The French Professional Football League (LFP) announced the decision on Wednesday, barring Fonseca from matchday duties until November 30 and restricting his access to team dressing rooms, the pitch, and related areas until September 15.
The incident occurred after a review of a potential penalty for Brest, which was ultimately not awarded. Fonseca, angered by the decision, confronted Millot aggressively, reportedly leaning his face close to the referee and attempting what Millot described as a “headbutt,” resulting in his immediate dismissal. Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso and other players intervened to prevent further escalation.
Fonseca apologized for his actions both publicly and in writing. However, Lyon criticized the severity of the punishment, describing it as “unprecedented” and expressing concern over the speed of its implementation. The club argued that Fonseca’s actions were an emotional reaction without intent to harm and confirmed they are exploring options for appeal.
Lyon owner John Textor also defended Fonseca, calling the punishment “too severe” and reaffirming his support for the coach. Despite this domestic ban, Fonseca remains eligible to manage Lyon in European competitions, including their upcoming Europa League match against FCSB.
This controversy comes amid heightened scrutiny of refereeing in French football. Last month, Marseille president Pablo Longoria faced a 15-match ban after accusing referees of “corruption,” further fueling tensions between clubs and officials. The French referees’ union has since warned of potential resignations if threats against officials persist.
