Malawi Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili has labeled their upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualification clash against Angola as a challenging test, emphasizing the strength of their opponents.
“This is a good but tricky fixture, especially since many anticipated we would face Zimbabwe. We need thorough preparation, and the players must remain vigilant. My focus as a coach will be on analyzing Angola’s strengths and weaknesses to identify opportunities we can capitalize on,” Fazili stated confidently.
Fazili reaffirmed the team’s ambition to achieve their first-ever WAFCON qualification but acknowledged the hard work required to reach this milestone. He called on the Football Association of Malawi to organize additional friendly matches to help the players sharpen their competitive edge.
Angola earned their spot in the second qualification round after a dramatic victory over Zimbabwe. The two teams were tied 3-3 on aggregate, with Angola winning 2-1 at home in the first leg and Zimbabwe replicating the scoreline in the second leg. Angola ultimately triumphed 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout.
In contrast, Malawi advanced without playing a single match, as Congo Brazzaville withdrew from the competition. The Scorchers now face Angola in a two-legged showdown scheduled for October 20th and 28th, with a coveted place at WAFCON hanging in the balance.
