WHICH PREMIER LEAGUE RECORDS CAN MOHAMED SALAH BREAK IN POSSIBLE ALL-TIME GREAT INDIVIDUAL SEASON FOR LIVERPOOL?
Mohamed Salah scored his 25th Premier League goal of the campaign in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City. With The Reds looking set to win the title, their Egyptian star is gunning for a number of records of his own, both in terms of goals and assists, between now and the end of the season. We explore what these are, as Salah bears down on some greats of the game.
Mohamed Salah will make ‘right decision’ over his future, says Liverpool boss Arne Slot
Mohamed Salah will make ‘right decision’ over his future, says Liverpool boss Arne Slot”Everybody wants Mo…including us!” said Liverpool head coach Arne Slot on Friday as he addressed the rumours around Salah’s future.
Following their impressive 2:0 win against Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to 13 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal.
The Gunners might have a game in hand, but with the gap as it is and 10 games remaining for the leaders, the roads around Anfield can probably start planning for an end-of-season street parade.
Liverpool’s remarkable campaign has been spearheaded by the virtually unstoppable Mohamed Salah, whose strike at the Etihad to put his side in front made it 25 league goals for the season – six ahead of his closest challengers for the Golden Boot, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland.
Not content with scoring, the Egyptian also set up Dominik Szoboszlai to make it 2-0, and claim his 16th and 17th assist of the campaign.
The 32-year-old forward shows little sign of letting up and with Liverpool on the march towards the title, Salah has his eyes on several records as he embarks on an all-time great season in the Premier League.
WHICH PREMIER LEAGUE RECORDS CAN SALAH BREAK THIS SEASON?
Salah’s remarkable output at Liverpool sees him potentially looking to break the record for most goals scored in a Premier League season, and the most assists by a player in a Premier League season.
Should he hit either or both of the records, he would also end the season with the most goal contributions of any player in the competition’s history, dating back to the inaugural 1992/93 campaign.
HOW CLOSE IS SALAH TO BREAKING THE GOALS RECORD?
Salah’s goal against City made it six league matches in a row in which he has found the target, and remarkably, he has only failed to score in six of Liverpool’s 27 matches to date this campaign.
On a personal level, his 25 goals so far this campaign is only bettered by the 32 he scored in his debut season at the club in 2017/18, a target he is looking to surpass this time around.
Premier League | Season | Goals |
1. Erling Haaland | 2022/23 | 36 |
2. Andrew Cole | 1993/94 | 34 |
= Alan Shearer | 1994/95 | 34 |
4. Mohamed Salah | 2017/18 | 32 |
5. Luis Suarez | 2013/14 | 31 |
23. Mohamed Salah | 2024/25 | 25* |
Averaging a goal every 96 minutes at present, and assuming he plays all of Liverpool’s remaining 11 fixtures, Salah is on course to score 10 more goals this season, which would see him finish on 35 – one shy of Haaland’s record of 36 scored in 2022/23.
In his previously fruitful 2017/18 campaign, Salah averaged a goal every 91 minutes from fewer overall minutes on the pitch.
Premier League | Season | Goals (Mins/Goal) |
= Sergio Aguero | 2019/20 | 16 (91) |
= Mohamed Salah | 2017/18 | 32 (91) |
8. Sergio Aguero | 2017/18 | 21 (94) |
9. Erling Haaland | 2023/24 | 27 (95) |
= Fernando Torres | 2009/10 | 18 (95) |
11. Luis Suarez | 2013/14 | 31 (96) |
= Didier Drogba | 2009/10 | 29 (96) |
= Mohamed Salah | 2024/25 | 25 (96)* |
HOW ABOUT ASSISTS?
Salah now has 16 assists after 27 matches, which already has him at eighth on the all-time list for a single season, four behind joint-leaders Thierry Henry, who recorded 20 in 2002/03, and Kevin De Bruyne who notched up the same tally in 2019/20.
Premier League | Season | Assists |
1. Thierry Henry | 2002/03 | 20 |
2. Kevin De Bruyne | 2019/20 | 20 |
3. Mesut Ozil | 2015/16 | 19 |
4. Frank Lampard | 2004/05 | 18 |
= Kevin De Bruyne | 2016/17 | 18 |
= Cesc Fabregas | 2014/15 | 18 |
7. Cesc Fabregas | 2007/08 | 17 |
= Mohamed Salah | 2024/25 | 17* |
8. Eric Cantona | 1992/93 | 16 |
= Kevin De Bruyne | 2017/18 | 16 |
= Kevin De Bruyne | 2022/23 | 16 |
Averaging an assist every 150 minutes, Salah would be on course to register 6.6 more for this season if he plays in every game.
Premier League | Season | Assists (Mins/Assists) |
= Kevin De Bruyne | 2019/20 | 20 (140) |
= Ryan Giggs | 2001/02 | 12 (140) |
7. Mohamed Salah | 2024/2025 | 17 (150)* |
WHAT ABOUT TOTAL GOAL CONTRIBUTIONS?
His 41 goals and assists so far has him seventh on the all-time list, six behind Alan Shearer from 1994/95 and Andrew Cole in 1993/94. Both players had identical records of 34 goals and 13 assists but notably played in seasons when the Premier League was made up of 22 teams rather than the current 20, meaning over the course of the season, teams played four more matches.
Salah also needs just one more goal involvement to beat his own previous best from 2017/18.
Premier League | Season | (Goals + Assists) Total |
1. Alan Shearer | 1994/95 | (34+13) 47 |
= Andrew Cole | 1993/94 | (34+13) 47 |
3. Thierry Henry | 2002/03 | (24+20) 44 |
= Erling Haaland | 2022/23 | (36 + 8) 44 |
5. Luis Suarez | 2013/14 | (31+12) 43 |
6. Mohamed Salah | 2017/18 | (32+10) 42 |
= Mohamed Salah | 2024/25 | (25+17) 42* |
Salah currently averages a goal involvement every 58 minutes this season, faster than any player in the history of the competition (minimum 1000 minutes played) and if he were to continue at this rate, would register 17 more contributions, obliterating the record.
Premier League | Season | (Goals+Assists) Total | Mins/Goal Involvement |
1. Salah | 2024/25 | (25+17) 42 | 58* |
2. Haaland | 2022/23 | (36+8) 44 | 63 |
3. Aguero | 2013/14 | (17+6) 23 | 67 |
HOW CLOSE IS HE TO BREAKING ALL-TIME RECORDS?
With 182 Premier League goals (to date!) Salah is still some way off the record of 260 held by Shearer.
In terms of assists, his 85 is only just over halfway to Ryan Giggs’ leading total of 162.
WILL SALAH WIN THE PFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD?
There is little way of knowing for sure but if we allow ourselves to speculate, then it is difficult to look beyond Liverpool’s star man this year.
Should he claim the award, he would become the first player to win it for a third time, having previously picked up the gong in 2017/18 and 2021/22.
WHAT ABOUT THE BALLON D’OR?
Remarkably, Salah has never even made the top three of the Ballon d’Or voting in the past but has already been tipped for success this time around by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
